Near Death Experiences

As a six-year old child, in 1950, I had a near-death experience (NDE) during an episode of meningitis. It was very influential in how I saw life and the choices that I have made throughout my life. I never spoke of it until I was 44 years old (1988) because I did not want to seem strange and it felt private. When I read Ken Ring's book, Heading Toward Omega and learned about all of the changes in values that people experience as a result of their NDEs, I realized that I needed to talk about my own experience in order to help the general public understand how really common NDEs are. I realized that people might listen to me because I was a family practice and hospice doctor--and a near-death experiencer.

Since that decision in 1989, I have given some 100 talks about NDEs to a variety of organizations including cancer centers, universities, consciousness workshops, hospitals, the National Hospice Organization, and numerous talks at the International Association of Near Death Studies (IANDS) annual workshops. Please see scheduled events for upcoming lectures. I've also written a book about hospice and NDEs, Love is the Link: A Hospice Doctor shares her Experience of Near Death and Dying. I have also served on the board of IANDS.

On October 10, 2014, I interviewed with Sandra Champlain of We Don't Die Radio, describing how my childhood Near Death Experience has influenced my life.
